- Effective date:

The short version
A plain-language summary. The full terms below are what legally applies.
- This agreement is between you and us, and it covers this website, the free tools on it, and the paid course.
- It applies to anyone who uses the site — you don't have to buy anything for it to apply.
- Everything here is educational. It isn't medical, legal, or employment advice, and it doesn't replace your own doctor, attorney, or HR team.
- If you buy the course, your access link is personal to you — please don't share or resell the materials.
- We don't receive payment from any provider we recommend. Choosing a provider is your decision.
- Payments are handled by Paddle, and you can ask for your money back within 30 days.
Who we are
This website and everything on it is run by The Atypical Advocate ("we", "us", "our"). When you use the site or buy the course, these terms are the agreement between you and us.
You may reach us at atypicaladvocate@gmail.com.
Accepting these terms
By using this site or continuing to use it after we update these terms, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please stop using the site. You confirm you are of legal age to enter into this agreement, or that you have authority to accept these terms on behalf of the organisation you represent.
What we provide
We provide educational patient advocacy resources: the Symptom Matcher, the FMLA Wizard, written guides, and the paid course "How to Advocate As a Patient". Buying the course gives you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to access and use the course materials for your own use.
This is not medical, legal, or employment advice
Everything here is general educational information. It is not medical advice, a diagnosis, a treatment recommendation, legal advice, or employment advice, and it does not create a clinician–patient or attorney–client relationship. We are not a substitute for your licensed providers, and nothing here should delay you seeking care.
Always talk to your own doctor, attorney, or HR/benefits professional before making decisions about your health, your leave, or your rights. FMLA and related rules vary by employer, state, and circumstance — always verify against your own paperwork and current law. You are responsible for the decisions you make and for anything you submit to a provider or employer.
Provider recommendations
We don't receive payment from any provider we recommend. Choosing a provider is your decision.
- We never accept money, gifts, referral fees, or anything else of value from doctors, clinics, or other providers for recommending them or sending clients their way.
- Any provider we mention — on our provider list, in the symptom tool, in the course, or in conversation — is suggested only because they may be a good fit. It isn't an endorsement or a guarantee of their care.
- Please confirm a provider takes your insurance and suits your needs before booking.
Your account and information
Your course access link is personal to you. Keep it confidential — anyone with the link can open your course. You are responsible for activity that happens under your access. Please give us accurate information (including a working email address) and keep it up to date, so we can deliver what you paid for.
Acceptable use
You agree not to misuse the site or the course. In particular, you must not:
- use the service for anything unlawful, or to harm or harass anyone;
- engage in fraud, spam, or misrepresentation;
- copy, share, resell, redistribute, or publish the course materials, or share your access link, beyond your own personal use;
- infringe our intellectual property or anyone else's;
- interfere with the security or operation of the service — including malware, probing, scanning, scraping, or circumventing technical limits;
- reverse engineer or attempt to derive the source of the service.
Intellectual property
We (or our licensors) own the site, the tools, the course materials, the software, and the branding, and we keep all rights in them. Nothing in these terms transfers ownership to you. Where you submit content to us — for example, notes or symptoms you enter — you grant us a limited licence to host and process that content solely to provide the service to you.
Availability
We work to keep the service running, but we do not guarantee that it will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free, and we may change, suspend, or discontinue parts of it. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.
Payment, billing, and taxes
Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns.
Payment, billing, applicable taxes, cancellation, and refund mechanics are governed by Paddle's Buyer Terms (opens in a new tab). Our own Refund Policy sets out the window in which you can ask for your money back.
Suspension and termination
We may suspend or end your access if you materially breach these terms, if payment fails or is reversed, if there is a security or fraud risk, or if you repeatedly or seriously violate our acceptable use rules. If your access ends, you will no longer be able to open the course materials. You may stop using the service at any time.
Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law:
- we are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages — including lost profits, lost data, or loss of goodwill;
- we are not liable for the outcome of a medical, employment, or legal decision you make;
- our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, death, or personal injury caused by negligence, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
Indemnity
You agree to indemnify us against claims arising from your unlawful use of the service, content you submit, or your breach of these terms.
Other terms
- Assignment — you may not transfer your rights under these terms without our consent; we may transfer ours in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
- Events outside our control — neither of us is responsible for delays caused by things we cannot reasonably control.
- Governing law — these terms follow the laws of the United States and the state in which we are established, and disputes are handled by the courts there.
- Severability — if any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest still applies.
